Clemens Forell (Benhard Bettermann), is a Wehrmacht lieutenant, who is taken captive by the Soviet Army at the end of World War II and is sent along with tens of thousands of prisoners to a Gulag in Siberia in winter across the steppes on a hellish trek. Before being sent to the front he had promised his daughter and wife to return alive.

On the way several prisoners are executed, freeze to death or die in accidents. Arrived at the forced labor camp (Gulag), he will be subjected to the brutal treatment reserved for millions of German political dissidents and prisoners of war whose purpose is to exterminate them by forced labor, in a coal mine.

In the camp they are received by Lieutenant Colonel Kamenev, ‘a Hero of the Soviet Union who tries to subdue Forrel’s will and competes with him to subdue him. Forrel only wants to escape even though the Gulag is in the middle of the steppe and it is winter.

This Friday is the premiere of Hasta donde los pies me lleven. Based on a best-seller by Josef Martin Bauer, German director Hardy Martins has made a truly admirable and uncomplicated film, which presents an anthropological conception far removed from modernist assumptions.

The film has the classic format of escape and chase, with a textbook antagonist in the form of the Soviet officer Kamenev. However, the human depth of the protagonist – and his family – make the film something special. Farell is a man with a unitary conscience, who being a Catholic has no problem going into an Asian mosque, and on his knees asking God’s forgiveness for the things he is being forced to do. He knows that there is only one God, and a mosque is an ideal sacred place to pray when there is nothing else. When he is starving in the middle of the frozen tundra, he cries out in tears to God, «Our Father, who art in Heaven, give me NOW my daily bread, NOW.» And a seal is God’s answer.
