Hurtado de Mendoza, Juan. The Clean. ?, 1351 – Madrid, 1426. Ensign in the reign of Juan I of Castile, butler of Enrique III, ayo and butler during the regency of the infante Don Juan (II), butler until his death in 1426.
When the latter died in 1416, the aspirations of his sons appeared, to whom their father had left inherited «the best that without sin could be». Alfonso, Juan, Enrique, Sancho and Pedro, his heirs, known as «the infants of Aragon», led the opposition during the reign of Juan II, together with the nobles and also the crown prince, the future Enrique IV.
Then, the infante Don Enrique and his followers agreed that the King should order his steward to hand over the Alcázar of Segovia. Juan Hurtado resisted and, after much discussion, it was decided to release him from prison so that he would hand over the fortress in person, but he broke the homage agreement and left Tordesillas. Instead of going to Segovia, he took the road to Olmedo. The people that the infante Don Enrique sent in his pursuit did not manage to reach him. From Olmedo he took the road to Cuéllar to meet with the prince Don Juan, who, as soon as he had news of the serious event, went without further delay to Castile and, with the troops he managed to gather, settled in Cuéllar to await events. Juan Hurtado went there.
