why did michelangelo make david?

One of the great attractions of your tourist trip to Florence is the possibility of seeing one of the great works of art of the Renaissance, the imposing sculpture of David by Michelangelo Buenarroti.

The original sculpture of Michelangelo’s David can be found in the Accademia Gallery, a museum whose visit is a must during your trip to Florence, if only to see this world-famous work of art live.

One way is to buy tickets to visit the Accademia Gallery in advance of your trip, so you will choose the date and time of your visit and you will have priority access, without waiting in line.

After Michelangelo’s refusal to place the sculpture in the Loggia de Lanzi, the great portico of the Signoria square, at the end of 1504 it was finally installed in front of the facade of the Palazzo Vecchio.

the last judgment

This is one of the most impressive sculptures in the history of art. Its author was Michelangelo Buonarroti, who in addition to being a famous sculptor was an architect, urban planner and engineer, poet and painter, excelling with mastery in all these fields. He became one of the most important sculptors of the Italian Renaissance thanks to his study of ancient works from the collection of Lorenzo «The Magnificent».

In this sculpture Michelangelo represents David in the moment before the confrontation, since the head of Goliath does not appear between his feet as it was usual in different pictorial and sculptural representations.

This sculptural work, almost five meters high, is inspired by classical statuary and testifies to the profound anatomical knowledge that the artist possessed. Michelangelo depicts David as an athlete, but not as a young athlete, but as a man in the prime of his life. Depicted in the classical style, that is, he appears completely nude, holding in his left hand a sling (resting on his shoulder) and, in his right, a stone. He appears with a restrained and expectant aspect, this expectation is translated in the look and in the corporal tension, being the musculature clearly perceptible.

On the occasion of the World Cup Russia 2018, yesterday afternoon (11/06/2018) the replica of the sculpture of El David (Michelangelo) that is located on the esplanade of the City Hall of Montevideo, was dressed with the Uruguayan national team’s clothing.

This intervention (as expected) generated controversy and perhaps many people who never looked at El David when passing by the City Hall, now do so. From our page, as we have already said, we believe that El David should be illuminated at night and with an informative plaque. Perhaps all this commotion puts in question the most important thing.

On April 7, 1958 it was transferred to the Municipality of Montevideo and since then it belongs to the urban silhouette of downtown Montevideo. The place that occupies today although it is a little alone in front of the building of the IMM makes that the sculpture can be appreciated from all its sides. In the previous location you could only see its front and sides.

It would be good that the IMM put information to the side of the sculpture for the tourist and for the Uruguayan that does not know that it has one of the 4 copies in the world of the David. Between so much reform that they make of the esplanade every little time perhaps in some they give more importance to the sculpture…
