Smells Like Teen Spirit is the first track and first single from Nirvana’s studio album Nevermind. It was written by then band members Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic. It was released as a single in September 1991.
I was trying to write the best pop song. I was basically trying to imitate the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I first heard Pixies, I connected with that band so much that I even thought I should be in it – or at least in a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet first, then loud and heavy.
The name of the song had its origins when Cobain’s friend Kathleen Hanna painted «Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit» on the wall. Because they were previously talking about anarchism, punk rock and similar topics, Cobain interpreted it with a revolutionary meaning. Hanna had actually painted that phrase on the wall since Kurt smelled like the deodorant his then-girlfriend, Tobi Vail, was wearing. Months later, Cobain realized, after releasing the single, that «Teen Spirit» was the brand name of a deodorant.

«Smells Like Teen Spirit», is a song by the American grunge band, Nirvana. It is the opening track and lead single from the band’s second album, Nevermind (1991), released under the DGC Records label. The unexpected success of the track would lead to Nevermind topping various music charts around the world in early 1992, an event often regarded as the point at which grunge entered the mainstream.[4] The song’s unexpected success would lead to Nevermind topping various music charts around the world in early 1992, an event often regarded as the point at which grunge entered the mainstream.[4] The album was released on DGC Records.
Due to its massive success and how different it was from the songwriting of the mainstream rock scene of the 1980s, which was dominated by glam metal or retro bands, «Smells Like Teen Spirit» revived rock’s popularity, opening the door for grunge’s triumph in the 1990s. Moreover, this popularity of grunge was responsible for the renewed commercial interest in alternative rock,[7] which by the mid-1990s had become a dominant radio format.
The score of «Smells Like Teen Spirit» is in the musical key of F minor, and is based on a four-chord riff called power chords (F5 – Bb5 – Lab5 – Reb5). Singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain talked about the riff’s similarities to that of Boston’s «More Than a Feeling» in his diaries and when he introduced it to producer Butch Vig.[8] In addition, American music critic Dave Marsh talked about the riff’s similarities to that of The Kingsmen’s version of Richard Berry’s song «Louie Louie.»[9] The Kingsmen’s version of Richard Berry’s song «Louie Louie.»[9

It’s a great song. While the burgeoning power and fragility of Nevermind’s tracks hold steady throughout, Lounge Act slouches; the band couldn’t be willing to think of an ending for the track, so they simply slowed down the recorder.
That verse. That’s where Weezer got it from, right? The vocal harmonies, the washed out power chords, the nonsensical lyrics, and the general air of awkwardness. On A Plain is one of Nevermind’s most fun moments; it’s the Beach Boys in ripped jeans and worn-out Converse.
Stay Away shines through Cobain’s goofy delivery throughout the verses, attacking hipsters and wannabes who would rather «be dead than cool.» Snarky, sarcastic and with a supercharged chorus without being really aggressive, Stay Away remains an anthem for the marginalized to this day. Listen to Grohl’s wonderful run on the snares.
The B-side of Smells Like Teen Spirit possesses a riff that is painfully reminiscent of the A-side, but Drain You excels in other ways. Basically, it’s fun. It’s so much fun. Nirvana was often labeled as miserable bastards and while In Utero had its morbid moments, Drain You is a few minutes of unbridled adrenaline.
