A walk to remember

Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet star in this metaphysical journey about lost love, which tells the story of a separated couple who undergo a procedure to erase their memories of each other. The film is scripted by Charlie Kaufman.

The first installment of the trilogy tells the casual romance of a girl and a boy who meet on a train and decide to join together for a night in Vienna. A perfect ode to love forced by boundaries, this movie will leave you confused and relieved to know that there were more installments to find out what happened next. Ideal for those nostalgic for their love in the 90s.

The title says it all – what could be more romantic than a love story of the famous playwright William Shakespeare as he writes the iconic play Romeo and Juliet? A forbidden romantic and period piece with a vintage performance by Gwyneth Paltrow that we haven’t seen before.

This film starring Nicholas Cage and Cher (both of whom fascinate us) got Cher an Oscar win. A perfect Italian-American film set in New York that is a classic of the late 80s.

Titanic

Love is not what it used to be. Or is it? Fortunately for us, romantic comedy has been helping us get through bad times or strengthen relationships for more than a century. It also serves as simple entertainment or as a winning bet if you have family visiting.

It sounds simple, but from that premise, the paths are endless. Of course, as always, this list is personal and follows my criteria and taste, so I imagine that, like all of them, it will be a breeding ground for comments of dubious taste instead of trying to debate.

This pinnacle of desperate romantic comedy still doesn’t appear in the genre’s lists, I imagine so as not to catch anyone in a rancor. Tender, charming, full of animals and with a couple of dramatic twists that fit like a glove in what is undoubtedly the best romantic comedy of this ideal couple.

Nicholas Stoller debuted with a big hit in the form of nothing less than a revolutionary, lifelong classic love story with a patina of all the modernity and existential bitterness of the moment. A cast of stars, low blows and a scene-stealer so mind-blowing that he would later have his own movie. A masterpiece.

A new February 14th is coming, congratulations to all the lovers in the world. Nobody said it would be easy, and in fact it is not, but fortunately, there we have the magic of cinema to brainwash us and make us believe that, maybe, love is the force that moves the world. Hey, maybe not, but nobody can take away the good times we have had with romantic movies.

Romantic movies can be funny, tragic, classic animated or very modern. If your thing is to love and feel loved, there is nothing better than watching a good fiction about two people who suffer and enjoy together. Therapy? Maybe, but since there are so many and there’s no end to them, let’s celebrate Valentine’s Day by remembering some of the best romantic movies of all time.

Only a monster lover like Guillermo del Toro could propose a romance between a human woman and the black lagoon creature of our times. Sally Hawkins is a force of nature (as well as the best possible mom for Paddington) and steals our hearts in her scaly romantic adventure with Doug Jones. Surrounded by a cast brimming with charisma, ‘The Shape of Water’ is perhaps the Mexican filmmaker’s best film. Just be careful if cats are your passion in life.

Drama and romance films

It is inspired by Daniel P. Mannix’s 1958 book The Ones Who Are About to Die. A victorious general (Russell Crowe) refuses to follow the new emperor who killed his father. He narrowly escapes, but discovers that his family was killed and soon after is captured by slavers and trained as a gladiator.

As she grows up, she becomes close friends with Edmund Bertram (Jonny Lee Miller), the son of her aunt’s husband, and eventually the two must deal with their feelings. The film is an adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1814 novel.
